The Importance of Awareness in a Weight Loss Diet
If you want to make dieting work for you, you have to develop one very crucial trait. That characteristic is that of awareness. Awareness means being in full control and knowing everything about any activity you are currently engaged in.
Cognizance is close in meaning to it and this entails a full realization of all parts of your diet program. When you are aware of everything you do, you cannot blame anyone or any circumstance other than yourself in case your regimen fails.
Awareness is essential to success in your weight loss diet because it makes you actively involved in the program. You have to know the reasons behind why you are following such a regimen and the scientific rationale of the food proportions and restrictions.
This also prevents you from succumbing to the false promises offered by fad or crash diets. It also leads you to question why food restriction is beneficial when it slows down your metabolism. In short, awareness leads you to become an educated dieter.
When you are aware, you know what foods to eat, how much of such foods you can eat and the method of food preparation that is healthy and beneficial for you. A fully-informed dieter eats fruits, vegetable and whole grains while cutting back on highly-processed foods. You realize that eating apples or oranges by the bag won’t derail your weight loss efforts but will in fact support it.
In the same vein, you also realize that the French fries, donuts and other processed foods you eat will inevitably lead to excessive weight gain no matter how little you eat of them everyday. As an educated dieter, you will remove skin from the chicken meat to reduce the fat content. Fish meat is infinitely healthier than pork meat.
Healthy cooking methods are developed with constant awareness. You can steam or boil instead of always frying everything in oil or butter.
This applies to preparation of salads, too. What you initially think of as an all-vegetable healthy meal can get fat-laden with all the condiments and seasoning you have put in. Learn to replace mayonnaise with vinaigrette dressings for a really healthy salad.
When blending your smoothies, make it a habit to use only the natural sweetness of the fruit and not rely on refined sugars since this could up the content of your healthy smoothie really fast. If any sweetener must be used, stick to a little honey instead of refined sugar. Also, learn how to substitute calorie-laden food with not-so-calorie-laden food that can still satisfy your sugar craving. Ice cream is best replaced with non-fat or low-fat yogurt while fruits are the best substitutes for chocolates and candies.
Awareness also encourages you to always incorporate exercise as part of your weight loss program. Dieting might make you lose the pounds but it does nothing to tone and make your muscles lean and strong. If you don’t exercise you’ll have flabby underarms that don’t look good at all. More than the physique, exercise keeps you healthy and hastens your weight loss.
