Is Lap Band Surgery Good For Severe Asthmatics?

March 5th, 2010

The rapid increase in obesity across the country has resulted in a number of serious health problems. Many of these health problems can deteriorate a person\’s quality of life and even shorten a person\’s life. One such health condition that is made worse when obese is asthma. Studies are now showing that there is a link between asthma and morbid obesity. For people who are suffering from severe obesity, lap band surgery has been shown to be an effective method of weight loss that reduces instances of severe asthma attacks.

Obesity has been proven to be a risk factor for such diseases as heart disease, some types of cancer, and diabetes. Now, research studies are revealing that obesity is a risk factor for asthma. For instance, studies now show the risk for developing asthma increases when there is a large increase in weight. When a person is seriously overweight, their breathing becomes shallow because their lungs do not expand as much as it would if one were a normal healthy weight. As well, in obese individuals, there is a chronic inflammation of the lungs which reduces the airway passage. The inflammation takes place in the fatty tissue. A narrower airway passage also means the airways will remain blocked when breathing normally which reduces oxygen exchange. The airways will contract more causing more asthma symptoms. Narrow airways in obese asthmatics are more likely to stay closed during normal breathing which results in reduced oxygen exchange which puts one in a higher risk category for pulmonary hypertension. As well, obese people are more prone to sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease which can make asthma worse.

When a person suffers from obesity, they tend to have more severe asthma problems than those who are not obese. With a weight loss surgery such as lap band surgery, there can be considerable improvement for people suffering from asthma. With the loss of the excess fat, lung function will improve, inflammation will subside, the air passages will open up, and people will breathe better. As well, they will need less medication and there will be fewer trips to the hospital due to a severe asthma attack.

Lap band surgery has become a popular weight loss procedure to treat obesity because it is minimally invasive with few side effects. As well as having proven positive health results, the procedure normally takes less than an hour and the patient recovery time is short with most patients going home just a few hours after the procedure. It is also the only reversible option and post operative lap band adjustments are made without additional surgery.

During home recovery, the patient will have simple diet to follow as they learn how to eat healthy and the correct amounts of food. Lap band surgery is a great option for those suffering from obesity and serious health problems such as asthma. When considering any type of surgery, it is important to consult with a physician to learn about the benefits and risks involved with the procedure.

How Dieting And Metabolism Help In Weight Loss?

February 7th, 2010

There are many people who want to lose weight by utilizing the weight loss programs. But almost 70% people don’t get the desired results after the program. The reason for this is either they are too lazy to follow a weight loss program or they don’t follow it systematically. Also, there is a huge misconception that dieting can help in reducing your weight. Its not completely wrong, but then dieting does not mean starving yourself.

Low calorie dieting slows your metabolism, making it progressively more difficult to lose weight and keep it off. The failure rate of most diets is astronomical, yet people continue to try one after another, always hoping that each new scheme will provide the solution. Let’s take a look at why diets often fail and how strength training and a healthy appetite can rev up your metabolism.

Dieting fails due to a combination of hormonal changes, muscle loss, and flat out frustration. When faced with a shortage of calories, your body’s natural response is to conserve fat. If a dieter persists long enough with the self-imposed famine for instant weight loss, the body begins to break down muscle tissue for fuel. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue. It requires a certain number of calories each day to maintain itself. Therefore, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even when you’re just sitting around. As your muscle mass drops, so does your daily calorie requirement.

However, we know that most dieters won’t keep up the starvation routine for long. They’ll eventually return to their old eating habits. When this happens, the weight inevitably keeps piling back on. While they lost both muscle and fat during the diet, what they put back was all fat. So, even though they may weigh the same as they did when they started, they now have a lot more fat and a lot less muscle than they did before the diet. This means that their metabolism is slower and their calorie requirements are lower.

The solution to this dilemma is an active lifestyle that includes aerobic exercise, a solid weight training program, a healthy diet and constant monitoring of your weight. Many times, best diet pills can also help in losing weight and giving you a slim body.

The bottom line is that you want to make strong, healthy, positive changes rather than punishing your body and your spirit with starvation. Your goal is the sleek healthy body of a naturally lean person who can enjoy what they eat.

Obesity In America – Do We Have A Chance?

January 17th, 2010

Obesity in the United America is at an all time high. The amount are actually astonishing and at epidemic levels. We tend to be literally eating ourselves to death. Here are some facts concerning our country and how overweight and obese we currently are. Why is U.S. the fattest nation on the planet? Why do we have a tendency to overeat as much as we do and do so very little to help ourselves subside obesity?

60 million people in the US are affected by the disease obesity, where girls and woman are particularly affected more. Over one-third of ladies between the ages of twenty and seventy four are obese, the bulk of them being Mexican American and African American. The number of Americans since the 1960’s that are overweight or obese are a direct result of prepackaged foods and exercise and activity become less and less.

Fast Food currently days plays a significant rule in the amount of obesity we see in our country. Fast food is currently socially accepted as a result of its globalization. These foods add more calories that you don’t need and are unhealthy in nature. The extra calories that are not weakened by the body is stored as fats which provides rise to obesity. It’s very easy for one to become overweight by eating fast food because it is so readily available to the public.

Since the 1990’s the statistics of overweight and obesity has dramatically increased as a direct result of the our eating habits and especially fast food restaurants. Obesity in children has dramatically increased since the 1980’s. Much to do with fast food and non outdoor exercise. The biggest factor being video games and computers. Honestly when is the last time you seen a kid outside playing. Its very rare to be the least.

In 1984 only 4% of children were thought to be obese. The obesity statistic in children current is 30%. 25% of all the obese children are starting to develop signs of diabetes type II. Of these children that are developing signs of diabetes type II more than 60% are showing signs of cardiovascular disease.

With obesity, comes the increased risk of diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes type II, heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer. In addition, obesity has been linked to mental health conditions like depression or feelings of shame and low self-esteem. Health consultants say that even losing 10 to 15 percent of your body weight will dramatically decrease the chance of developing these serious conditions. In addition, many obese people are discriminated against and targets of insults and alternative verbal abuse.

In the US we are seeing to many individuals dying each year as a result of obesity and many people that are obese are turning into diabetics. Who do we have a tendency to hold accountable? The people that distribute the foods that are bad for us? Well that would be one route to go but we are not forced to eat the food, we have a choice. Of course, it could not presumably be our fault as a result of we live in a very nation where we as a whole do not account ourselves responsible anymore.

Its time we start holding ourselves accountable for our eat habits and behaviors. In our current economic situation its much easier on our wallets to eat at fast food restaurants, especially since they are so readily available to us. We have to take totally different measures if we want to live a long healthy life. Eat leftovers. Eat a sandwich. Put together meals that are inexpensive but still healthy. Try other avenues before you eat at a fast food restaurant. Get the daily quantity of exercise. At least 1 hour a day. Make your children turn of the video games and get some outdoor exercise.

We need to manage and control this worldly problem before it is too late. If you found this article to be interesting and educating.
