Popular Water Events For The Backyard

September 13th, 2011

When it gets hot, most people head outdoors. A great deal go to a public pool, a river, lake or the beach, but others would rather stay in their own backyard. Some individuals are lucky enough to have a pool in their back garden, but not everybody has the space or the money. However, the majority of individuals like getting wet in order to cool down.

In this piece, we will look at a few of the things that you do can in the garden involving water to help you remain cool. The first one is the one we have already alluded to and the one home improvement that almost everyone would have if they could. A pool. People love the thought of having a garden pool.

If your budget cannot stretch to a large in ground pool, you could get a smaller above-ground pool. These above-ground pools are a lot cheaper, and while not large enough to swim in, they can certainly become considered substantial plunge pools. Half a dozen people can have a lot of enjoyment in one of these pools.

If this is not possible, what about a Jacuzzi or a hot tub? There is a lot of flexibility in hot tubs these days. You can have them built into all types of nooks and crannies in the garden.

You can also buy a hot tub of any size you want: two, foru, six, eight people and each person with a moulded chair with its own hydrotherapeutic directional water jets, so that you can play the jets on any parts of your body that you want.

If this is out of the question as well, what of a couple of garden water sprinklers? You could have plastic waterproof garden furniture and sit under the sprinklers simulating rain. This is an easy and very cheap method of cooling off when it is very warm.

You could hand everybody in your garden a water pistol to squirt everybody with. This might sound a little juvenile but kids and a lot of adults really enjoy it. Similar to this, you could fill a few dozen balloons up with water and use them for throwing at each other like having your own paint ball competition without getting dirty.

Water games are immense fun and a good manner of keeping cool whilst the sun is beating down in the summer. Just one word of warning – sunburn. Water will cool you down and you may not notice that you are burning. Be certain that everybody applies waterproof suntan lotion of a factor that is applicable to the degree of sunshine in your area.

Illnesses That Can Cause A Sleep Disorder

September 7th, 2011

We all know that having a cold can give you sleepless nights, but there are other more significant illnesses that can result in sleeplessness too. However, it is not only the illnesses themselves but the medications too can cause restless nights. Some of the most common diseases that can result in an interruption of sleep are: arthritis, kidney disease, mental illness, acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid issues and neurological disorders.

Some kinds of heart disease can also affect sleep patterns. For instance congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. These problems will obviously put the patient under fairly strict medical supervision.

Sufferers of the two heart diseases mentioned above run a high danger of developing obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a less serious disease than any heart disease, but it can have significant consequences too, including raised blood pressure, which makes it difficult if it is not treated.

The problem with obstructive sleep apnoea is that sufferers are normally the last to know about it, because it does not really cause the sufferer any distress although it can still have dire consequences.

The only real remedy for obstructive sleep apnoea is either the loss of weight which is not simple for heart patients or the wearing of an oxygen mask at night, which is known as CPAP.

Diabetes can cause Restless Leg Syndrome, which involves the involuntary thrashing around of the legs during sleep. This leads to a very restless night for both the sufferer and the partner as the kicks can get fairly violent – absolutely enough to kick a football. Thyroid problems can lead to nocturnal perspiration which can make the sufferer feel hot, damp and uncomfortable

Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s epilepsy and strokes can make the sufferer have concerns with REM sleep and insomnia. People who have had a stroke might also suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea.

Sufferers of asthma and other respiratory illnesses will have worries sleeping. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will cause insomnia and sleep fragmentation.

Mental health concerns such as depression, SAD’s and anxiety also lead to sleep disorders – usually also those of sleep fragmentation and insomnia.

GERD and acid reflux cause a burning sensation in the abdomen whilst the sufferer lies down, making it very difficult to sleep during an attack. There are tablets for this that are occasionally effective and raising the head a couple of inches can help as well.

Kidney disease can also cause restless leg syndrome and people with arthritis have problems sleeping because of the pain.

The point about all these causes of a restless night is that it is the underlying cause that is more significant than the consequence – that is, the restlessness. These are significant conditions, some of which can be cured. Once the main problem is solved the secondary one will disappear as well.

Do Fad Diets Work?

April 23rd, 2011

A fad diet is a fashionable diet plan that promises to help you lose weight more often than not in a relatively short time. A fad diet frequently attracts a lot of media coverage, which then attracts a large number of overweight people to try it in order to get back in shape. Fad diets are often soon discredited, but they keep raising their head from time to time.

The grapefruit diet was or is an example of a fad diet. People wanted to accept as true that you could lose weight solely by eating. The food in this instance was grapefruits, but there is also a cabbage diet. The trouble with these fad diets is that their slimming effect is only temporary, because you cannot eat only cabbage or grapefruit for the rest of your life, so the weight comes back as soon as you go back to normal.

‘If you always do what you always done, you will always get what you always got’ is a true saying. But what is worse is that a lot of of these diets can be injurious to your health.

However, do not think that fad diets are a new phenomenon. Fad diets or fad medicines have an ancient history going back to fake witch doctors, medicine men and quack doctors who doubled as barbers! Fad practitioners have a long and scandalous history and they are still alive and doing very well, thank you very much, today.

These days, medicine is too strictly regulated for them, so they have turned their attention to gullible, desperate dieters. Most of those that take up a fad diet are overweight teens longing to look like their favourite film idol.

Fad diets usually concentrate on reducing or completely eliminating carbohydrates. It is the low intake of carbohydrates that brings about the fast loss of weight. In fact, this quick loss is due to the quick loss of water that these low-carb diets induce. Much of the fat might still be there, so that when you stop the diet, your body regains its normal amount of water and the lost weight is put back on just as fast as it was discarded.

In the normal course of events, carbohydrates are the basis of energy for work and activity, but with these fad diets, the carbs are no longer there, so the body begins to break down its store of fat. This may seem advantageous but it is not necessarily so. The ketones resulting from the breakdown of fat are excreted via urine and often increased quantities of urine, which can cause dehydration. People with certain medical conditions have to be very cautious too; diabetics, for example.

Fad diets are popular, but they can be very detrimental to your body and when they do not have the desired result in the long-term, it can be very depressing leading to comfort eating. This is why many people begin a fad diet, lose weight and are radiant for a month or two, but then slip back when they are approaching their ideal weight. They go back to their old ways and the weight begins to come back. They become depressed, certain that they will never be able to lose weight; they comfort eat some more, maybe giving up any hope of regaining a normal weight permanently.

Is There An Atkins Grapefruit Diet?

June 10th, 2010

The Atkins Grapefruit diet is a diet plan, not supported by the estate of Dr. Atkins, that hopes to play on the popularity of the grapefruit diet and the Atkins diet name. However, a closer look into this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

First off, it’s very hard to any find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan at all. Clever people realize that when someone is perpetrating a deception, they will often skim over the facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet appears to be doing while trying to get people to associate it with two supposedly effective diets.

Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or recommended by the estate of the late Dr. Atkins? The answer is no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind mentioned in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase either.

The induction phase allows the following foods: Fish of all kinds. All fowl such as turkey and chicken. Any shellfish. Any meat such as beef or pork. Eggs cooked in any style including fried. Cheese. Vegetables. Herbs and Spices. Fats and Oils. Low carbohydrate beverages including diet soft drinks.

Please, notice one thing – that fruit is not on that list at all! Later phases of the Atkins diet do include limited amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe and even lemon juice, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases even allow small quantities of grapefruit, but when looked at in comparison with the amount of Grapefruit recommended on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet there is a huge discrepancy.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most liberal phases of the Atkins diet suggests restricting intake to less 8 carbs per day, with regard to grapefruit. That is a direct contradiction from one diet to the other.

Most sensible people would turn to the Atkins website itself the moment they heard of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet and when they found no reference of that diet on their site, a red light would flash and an alarmbell would sound.

In general, remember this: any diet that relies too heavily on one food, such as grapefruit in a grapefruit diet, is unhealthy for any but very short periods. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not associated with the Atkins diet, and may interfere with the results of the Atkins diet in its early phases.
